How Much Education Does a Therapist Need?

Mental Health Therapists

Mental health therapists include counselors, social workers, and psychologists. They help people deal with feelings, stress, and problems.

• Bachelor’s Degree: First, you usually get a four-year college degree. A common choice is psychology or another people-focused subject.
• Master’s Degree: Most therapists then need a master’s degree. This is another two to three years in graduate school.
• Doctoral Degree: If you want to become a psychologist, you will need even more schooling—a doctorate, which is about four to seven more years after college.
• Licensing: Almost all therapists have to work under supervision for a while and pass a test to get their license to practice.

Physical Therapists (PTs)

Physical therapists help people recover after injuries or surgeries. They teach patients exercises and guide them as they get stronger.

• Bachelor’s Degree: You’ll need a four-year college degree, usually in a science subject.
• Doctor of Physical Therapy Program: Then, you must go to graduate school for about three years to get your DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy).
• Licensing: You have to pass a big test to get your license to work as a physical therapist.

Occupational Therapists (OTs)

Occupational therapists help people learn or re-learn everyday skills after injuries or illnesses.

• Bachelor’s Degree: Start with a four-year college degree.
• Master’s or Doctoral Degree: Most become OTs by earning a master’s degree (about two years), but some go even further for a doctorate (about three years).
• Licensing: You also need a license. This means passing a national exam and finishing some supervised work.

How Many Years Does It Take to Become a Physical Therapist?

Let’s take a closer look at what it takes if you want to be a physical therapist. It’s a long road, but many people find it worth it.

Step 1: College (4 Years)

Go to college for four years. You don’t have to pick a certain major, but you do need to take science classes. A lot of students volunteer or work in physical therapy clinics to get experience, too.

Step 2: Doctor of Physical Therapy Program (3 Years)

Get into a DPT graduate program. You’ll study both in classrooms and in real clinics.
Year 1: Learn the basics—how the body works, what can go wrong, and how to help people move better.
Year 2: Study more detailed topics, like helping people with specific injuries or conditions. You’ll start getting some hands-on experience.
Year 3: Spend most of your time working with real patients under supervision.

Step 3: Pass Your Test and Keep Learning
